Vigilance, Knowledge, and De/colonization

This article shows how vigilance against racism and coloniality in the US-Mexico borderlands produces knowledge, highlighting decolonizing potential of their dynamic entanglement. Before Black Lives Matter protests police violence across United States late May 2020, many Latin@s San Diego, California, already anticipated racial discrimination light growing anti-migration sentiment. Those who took part often also protested border patrol violence. Based on long-term ethnographic fieldwork, we argue that Latin@s, were further racialized as “immigrants” through protest participation, produced knowledge about ongoing Diego. We propose theorizing having both to uphold colonialist structures undermine these.
